Shawshank Redemption Box?

From: geoflyfisher (geoflyfisher@yahoo.com) | Date: 2002-01-14 13:16:21 UTC
This question is a little off the wall...

I suppose that many of you have seen the scene near the end of the
Shawshank Redemption with the note in the box by the stone wall. It
was on TV again this last week.

Does anyone know where that wall is?? It looks like it is in the
eastern US from the trees and rock wall. If it is accessible, it
would be fun to leave a letterbox there!

I'm picturing Yasgur's farm that is overrun with would-be Woodstockers
every summer. Would King be tricky enough to make up a farm outside of
Buxton but shoot footage elsewhere?

I'm not a major King fan, though I love a good mystery. Now I'm going
to have to rent the movie and see if I can find the wall. Let me know
if any of you get there first. :)

Allegedely, they couldn't find a suitable wall for their purposes, and
actually had to make one just for the movie.

I can believe that, since you tend not to see a lot of stone walls out
in the open around here (I live in Grantham, NH), they all tend to be
in the forest and underbrush.

Well, a friend of mine's parents live in Buxton, and they have a stone
wall...I rather doubt they'd be crazy about a bunch of letterboxers
showing up in the backyard on a regular basis though... Maybe we'll
just have to use our imaginations.

Since most movie-makers use all kinds of poetic license when they
create the film, that wall in the movie probably was made up or could
be located in California for goodness sake!!

But it is a fantastic idea for a letterbox. And I guess the person
who plants it could put it in any stone wall he wishes, although a
true Stephen King fan would choose Maine.

To give a more complete answer to this question... The Directors
Notes to Shawshank are available on the web through
http://welcome.to/shawshank. The particular page is

http://people.we.mediaone.net/younglee1/scenes_251a.htm

Under "Scene 292A" the director talks about renting the field from a
farmer in Ohio, harvesting the alfalfa growing on it, building the
stone wall by hand[1], and letting the alfalfa grow back in time to
film it.

So it's in Ohio, probably near Mansfield, where the "Shawshank" Prison[2]
is.

[1] There's a quote in the cited page about "You didn't think we just
found that wall, did you", which makes more sense now that I know the
field was in Ohio. If they were in New England, they might've
actually found something... (You know, the terrain shown in Shawshank
did look a little less hilly than most of New England)

[2] Actually the old Mansfield Reformatory, which is rather neat.
Visit it if your are in the area.
